Amanda's Cadwell dramas
After working night and day with Father Ronnie to prepare her 1971 Elden Mk8 to be more competitive after a frustrating Donington round, Amanda started to show her real potential on a track she loves by qualifying in 4th place out of 28 runners in the Historic Formula Ford event, despite only getting one flying lap with her engine running on all 4 cylinders. She also qualified 2nd in class and 6th overall in the Classic Racing Cars race. "We found out why we were off the pace before - the old engine had a 1300cc head and valves and a transit van camshaft!"
Although she dropped back at the start of the race with too much wheel spin off the line, she quickly retook her position. Shortly after, a hail storm caught the leading pack unaware and the pair ahead of Amanda slid off the track. A couple of corners later she was also caught out by the conditions and spun off the track herself.
"After the two in front of me went off, all I wanted to do was to tip-toe around the track, but I just aquaplaned off on the hailstones. I restarted & carried on, but then got caught out again a lap later - in a straight line at low revs." said Amanda.
"The conditions were horrendous - the worst I've ever raced in - and I just aquaplaned down the straight, spinning into the middle of the track. The engine wouldn't restart because of the water and I was just a sitting duck. I was waving my arms for people to see me, but I was hit hard by another car which ripped off my suspension. It was red flagged about the same time due to the weather, but it was too late."
The race was due to be rerun at the end of the day, but due to an unfortunate death in a Formula Junior race, this was not possible. She also couldn't make the Classic Racing Cars event, but is rebuilding the car in time for the next round at Silverstone in 4 weeks time. Trackside photo's courtesy of Michael Herring. |
