Amanda and the Formula 2 Giant Killers! Amanda Whitaker and her team mates produced a great display of competitiveness at the inaugural Silverstone Classic race meeting this weekend. Racing in the 'Derek Bell Trophy' on Saturday, Amanda drove her 1976 Chevron Formula Atlantic car to not only a dominant class win, nearly a lap ahead of her nearest competitor but also ahead of nearly half the field of the much faster Formula 5000 cars!
"The Formula 5000 cars have nearly treble the power of my Formula Atlantic car with a 5 litre engine and some with over 600 break horse power. Although I was unable to keep with them on the straights, I was quicker in the corners and I'd like to think a little local knowledge also helped!" she said, referring to the fact that she is also an experienced Silverstone racing instructor. Her team mates also performed strongly in the race with Chris Alford finishing a strong 2nd in class behind Christian Fisher who took the class win and a superlative 3rd overall against a 41 car field after a race long battle with the Formula 5000's. Amanda paid tribute to her team Giles Beck Motorsport after the event: "The team did a good job in getting our cars sorted for the race and I'd like to thank them for the effort. The fact that so many of the Formula 2 cars featured well in the race shows how competitive our series is." she said. Amanda has now closed the gap to championship leader Herman Unold with 6 races remaining. She next races at Oulton Park at the end of August in a non-championship event celebrating 40 years of Chevron racing cars.
